Marcus J. Ranum is one of the most popular and richest Computer Scientist who was born on November 5, 1962 in New York, United States. Marcus co-authored “Face Off” articles along with Bruce Schneier. These articles have been published approximately bi-monthly in Information Security Magazine, since July 2006.
Ranum spoke to USENIX audiences at LISA 1999, 1999 (tutorial), LISA 2000 (keynote), 2002 (tutorial), and 2003 (tutorial). Ranum spoke out against full disclosure in 2000 at the Black Hat Security Briefings. Ranum has also spoken at Interop 2005 and 2007, CanSecWest 2010 and Secure360 2011.
Ranum was instrumental in the design and implementation of Digital Equipment Corporation’s Secure External Access Link, (SEAL), which later became AltaVista firewall. This firewall is widely regarded as being the first commercial bastion host firewall. Ranum left DEC to become chief scientist and director of development for Internet security products at Trusted Information Systems. Ranum was responsible for whitehouse.gov’s Internet email site. Ranum, once charged with this responsibility, advocated for the whitehouse.com domain to be also registered. It was not registered by government, but it was later registered as an adult entertainment provider. Under a grant from DARPA, he created the TIS Internet Firewall Toolkit. He worked as V-One’s chief scientist after TIS and was heavily involved in the company’s IPO. Ranum founded Network Flight Recorder (NFR) three months after the IPO. He was CEO for three more years before stepping in as CTO. Ranum left NFR later to consult with TruSecure and joined Tenable Network Security in the role of CSO.
