Shapovalov started off his maiden clay court season at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he lost in straight sets to qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. At his second clay court tournament, the Hungarian Open, he once again lost in the first round, this time to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
