Beruff refused to apologize for his comments. He was defeated by 18.49% and 264.427 votes in the August 30 primary.
Beruff quit the Southwest Florida Water Management District board in August 2015 after he voted to approve a friend’s plan to devastate an acre of wetlands to make way for a development. A judge of administrative law recommended against the issuance of the permit. This allowed Pat Neal, a developer, to clear mangroves and fill in wetlands to construct a Perico Island family compound.
Charlie Crist, then-Florida Governor, appointed Beruff to the Sarasota Bradenton Airport Authority and Southwest Florida Water Management board. Rick Scott, the next governor of Florida, reappointed Beruff in all three positions. Beruff supported Charlie Crist in the Florida U.S. Senate Election 2010. He was an independent candidate and became a Democrat over Republican Marco Rubio.
Previously, Beruff was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2016, but lost the Republican primary. He was a gubernatorial appointee to the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport Authority, the Southwest Florida West Management Board, and the State College of Florida board.
